Artist's Comments

I got a couple of requests for a hair tutorial, so...ta da! This is for more of a quasi-realistic look, and you can omit step 6 if you're working with line art that doesn't permit those strand strands. Hope you find this helpful!

Questions? Comments? Requests for other quick, serial-like tutorials? Message or comments!

After reading some comments (or lack thereof), I'd like to say that I didn't put words on it mostly because there's no one way of going about things.

In essence, ths hair making is just mostly a layering process.

Hm, well being armed with a pressure-sensitive tablet, I begin with the basic shape of the hair. A few, thicker locks here and there, accordingly placed in the manner that fits your picture best: all done in a midtone color. The tapered ends come naturally if you use a tablet, but if you're a mouse user, you might have to spend some time refining it.

Then, I build up shadows using a smaller brush and a darker hue. This continues for about three to four shades dark.

I repeat the process with the highlights, building color up, but only about one or two shades bright.

Then the final touches come in: with a burn tool set to around 7 in opacity and a brush size greater than fifty, I burn in subtle shadows here and there, just to make them more dramatic. However, the main focus could be the colors you put there before. I don't recommend depending on the burn and dodge tools for any sort of coloring as things then to come out plasticy in appearance.

Repeat the process with a big brush/low opacity setting for the dodge tool to bring out more luminescent highlights.

Hope this was helpful!

This is cool... You did some nice hair in that sample. Since I'm a bit of a visual learner, I can see what you did for each step (I've been using PSP for nearly three years now, and I'm fairly familiar with all the tools and their properties and how each can be used) and I'll try to apply some of the techniques you did here. Wonderful!

The pictures give me a really nice step-by-step view of how hair-creation works, and the end-product is great.

But personally I never had any graphical education, like ~xiao, and it'd be nice to see what actually happens in each step (Brushes, etc)

Smuge it with your finger?! Hmmm, I'll try it at home! I just need explanation to make the addition hairs like in pic 5.
